Why on site chemical stabilization?
Too much contaminated soil in the DOD Complex
- Not enough landfill space for all contaminated soil from the entire Complex
- Solidification/encapsulation/vitrification requires too much volume or is too expensive and does not leave soil in place or in a form appropriate for most future uses
- Other innovative technologies still under development
Electrokinetic methods will not work for large sites or carbonate soils
Microbiological remediation not suited to metals/does not remove them or stabilize them but concentrates them in biomatrices
Phytoremediation produces contaminated plant material
Soil washing requires aggressive solutions and lengthy treatment
Others have large O&M requirements
